\"\"\u00a0The first person to write anything down about the story of the Deserter was Jean-Pierre Michelet (1873-1948). A year after his death, his book \u2018Le Livre du Souvenir\u2019 [\u2018The Book of Memory\u2019] was published that included seven pages all about Charles-Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Brun. Jean Giono wrote the novel \u2018Le D\u00e9serteur\u2019 mainly based on that text. \u201cHe wrote songs, or rather hymns, whose perfectly correct verses and stanzas were sung by us during the winter evenings. Unfortunately, I do not believe that any of these sheets remain, I myself saw some samples that were also referred to as \u2018the songs of the Deserter.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Marie-Jeanne Bournissen (1813-1880) was born at H\u00e9r\u00e9mence and died at Veysonnaz following a fall from a cherry tree. She was married to Jean-L\u00e9ger Fragni\u00e8re in 1835, and had four children with him. After her husband\u2019s death in 1853, Marie-Jeanne Bournissen married again, with Maurice-Joseph Fragni\u00e8re. The union produced two children. Giono made Marie-Jeanne the wife of the president Fragni\u00e8re of Nendaz, mixing up the families of Veysonnaz and of Nendaz. Was that a historical error, or a literary invention?<\/p>\n
